Japanese Retailers' Switch 2 Sales Restrictions Favor Resellers
Retailers in Japan are introducing strict rules around the sale of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles ahead of a hefty price increase.
Last week, Nintendo announced price "revisions" for Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, and Switch 2 as all four consoles become more expensive to produce. While these specific hikes exclusively impact units sold in Japan and take effect on May 25, the Switch 2 will cost $50 more ($499 instead of its $449 launch price) beginning September 1.
The imminent increases have consumers rushing to buy the new(ish) Switch 2 console before prices go up. In Japan, this has triggered long lines and fast sell‑outs, leading some stores to restrict who can buy the console, how they can pay, and how many units they can take home.
