Italy's research network builds sovereign storage - with no fallback to the public cloud
Preserving scientific data has become a pressing demand for researchers and their institutions. Since becoming President of the USA again, Donald Trump has instigated a programme of research database deletion, especially databases that disagree with his personal view that the world is not experiencing a climate emergency.
GARR, an academic community in Italy, has pioneered a data strategy that ensures sovereignty, increases data security and provides increased capacity to researchers. Massimo Carboni, Chief Technical Officer of GARR in Italy, is leading the project.
GARR provides its members, the major and prestigious universities of Italy, with a high-speed network. Over 1,000 organizations are members of GARR, including cultural organizations, research centers and universities. Members have access to a 24,000-kilometer fiber optic network that GARR says has a capacity of 39 terabits per second.
