About 30 million American households rely on Comcast’s Xfinity for their internet service and the majority of them rent their modem/router/gateway from Xfinity. And now Xfinity users with newer gateways can enable the WiFi Motion feature, which provides motion-sensing within the home. The question is: how good or bad is that?
This is the practical implementation of experimental techniques we’ve seen published in research papers for many years now. Radio waves from a Wi-Fi router or gateway penetrate walls, which is why you can get WiFi reception in your bedroom while the router is in the living room. By analyzing those radio waves, the router can “see” through walls and even detect people. It is complicated and requires serious number-crunching, but the technique is well-explained in publicly available literature at this point.
