IPL Cyber Frauds Rise With 600 Fake Ticket Sites And 400 Streaming Scams
As the frenzy around the Indian Premier League continues, cybersecurity researchers at CloudSEK have uncovered a sprawling cybercrime network exploiting cricket fans through fake ticketing portals and malicious streaming websites.
According to the company’s latest investigation, cybercriminals created more than 600 fake IPL ticketing domains and over 400 fraudulent “free streaming” websites during the season, turning cricket’s biggest tournament into a large-scale fraud opportunity.
The report highlights how these scams have evolved far beyond basic phishing attempts. Fraudsters are now deploying professional-looking websites, fake customer reviews, search engine optimisation (SEO), paid advertisements, QR-code payments, Telegram groups and even automated ticket-generation systems to make scams appear legitimate.
“IPL brings together scale, emotion and urgency. That is exactly what cybercriminals exploit. A fan looking for one last ticket or a free stream is not thinking about online safety risks,” said Sourajeet Majumder, Security Researcher at CloudSEK.
