Intel Confirms HyperThreading Returns Starting With Coral Rapids In 2028
Hyper-Threading is what Intel calls its implementation of what is more academically known as "Simultaneous Multi-Threading" (SMT). This describes a method where a single processor core can interleave processing of two or more separate program threads, usually delivering an overall performance uplift on multi-threaded tasks. Intel killed off Hyper-Threading in its consumer CPUs with the Core Ultra 200 series, and the next-generation "Diamond Rapids" CPUs, the Xeon 7 family, won't have it either. But apparently that will have been an error, because Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan has just confirmed that Hyper-Threading is coming back in Coral Rapids in 2028.
Speaking to industry analysts on Intel's earnings call yesterday, Tan was asked how he intends to regain marketshare in the server space versus AMD and Arm. His response was kind of rambling and didn't really answer the question, but in the first half, he said:
