Instagram Wants to Steal YouTube’s Playbook
Meta's Instagram has begun testing long-form videos, which it calls Features. A small group of US-based creators can now upload horizontal videos up to 90 minutes long. The platform plans to expand the US test to tens of thousands of creators, but it hasn't shared a public timeline for a wider rollout.
Features target content that does not fit neatly into vertical Reels, like full podcast episodes, "microdramas," and longer explainers. Instagram expects these longer videos to appear in its feed and on the Explore page, creating a more seamless connection with other formats.
In an interview with content creators Colin and Samir, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said he had long resisted long-form video because he wanted Instagram to remain focused on friends and social connection. He now says the platform needs to lean into long-form video as people increasingly watch Reels together and on television.
