Indian SMEs Want to Spend More on Cybersecurity. Readiness Is the Bigger Problem

Indian small and medium enterprises appear ready to spend more on cybersecurity. Whether that spending translates into stronger cyber resilience is a more complicated question.

A new study by Tata Tele Business Services (TTBS) and CyberMedia Research (CMR) finds that 84% of Indian SMEs plan to increase cybersecurity investments over the next 12 to 24 months.

Among medium-sized enterprises, that figure rises to 89%.

On the surface, the numbers point to cybersecurity becoming a more established business priority. But underneath the investment intent is a much less mature operational picture.

Only 12% of SMEs surveyed continuously monitor their cybersecurity environments.

Around 40% have experienced a cyber incident during the past 24 months, but only 28% implemented structural cybersecurity changes following an incident.

And 45% identify lack of cybersecurity expertise as their biggest barrier to implementing security effectively.
