India Weighs ₹20,000 Crore Fund to Scale AI and Compute
India has spent the past two years expanding access to the computing power needed to build artificial intelligence. The IndiaAI Mission initially set out to create access to more than 10,000 GPUs, but shared compute capacity had crossed 45,000 GPUs by June 2026.
But having GPUs available is only one part of the equation. As Indian companies move from experimenting with AI to building models and deploying them at scale, another challenge is becoming harder to ignore that who finances the companies and infrastructure behind the next phase of India's AI push?
The government is considering an anchor investment of ₹15,000 crore to ₹20,000 crore in a proposed National Frontier AI & Compute Fund (NFAICF) under the IndiaAI Mission, according to reports.
