India Is Ready to Scale AI Across Public Education: Report

India’s public education system has the policy and digital infrastructure needed to scale artificial intelligence (AI) across government schools and learning systems, according to a new report by Wadhwani AI, prepared in collaboration with The Bridgespan Group and supported by Google.org.

The report, titled Harnessing AI in Education for Future Readiness: Bold Bets for Every Learner, lays out a roadmap for integrating responsible AI into India’s education ecosystem, with a focus on public systems, last-mile delivery, and long-term adoption.

India has more than 250 million students across 1.5 million schools, with nearly 60% of learners enrolled in government and government-aided institutions. According to the report, policy reforms such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and digital public infrastructure including DIKSHA and the National Digital Education Architecture (NDEAR) have created the foundation for AI-enabled interventions to move beyond pilots and into system-level deployment.
