India Deepens Smartphone Manufacturing with Local Components
India’s Make in India story is entering a new chapter, and this time it’s less about the outer shell of a smartphone and more about everything hidden beneath it.
Marking 12 years since the initiative was launched, Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Railways, and Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw took to social media with a thread laying out where the country’s electronics ambitions are headed next. Vaishnaw noted that on September 25, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched Make in India at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, and twelve years on, he was signalling that the smartphone manufacturing ecosystem would keep expanding.
His message, in essence: assembling phones in India is old news. The bigger shift now is toward manufacturing the components and materials that actually go inside the device.
