I Ran an AI-Bot-Only Log Pipeline on My Sites for 30 Days. The Numbers Didn’t Match My SEO Tools
SEO dashboards count what they recognise. Server logs count what actually happened. The 30-day delta between the two was big enough to change how I think about AI visibility, and the verification step most operators skip.
For most of last year, I was relying on the AI-bot tracking widgets in two well-known SEO platforms to tell me what AI assistants were doing on the sites I work with. The widgets are pretty. They show "GPTBot fetched 142 pages this week", "ClaudeBot fetched 38", "PerplexityBot fetched 11."
They have nice colours and a sparkline. They are also, it turns out, undercounting the real traffic by a wide margin and miscounting the categories badly enough that the headline numbers are not safe to plan around.
