In these days of Google Earth, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and more, it is easy – but unwise – to overlook Ordnance Survey (OS), the UK’s national mapping agency. Every Brit of a certain age has grown up with its paper maps, as generations did back to its foundation in 1791.

But today, its OS Maps app has the rare distinction of being five-star rated by 100,000 reviews on the Apple App Store, and trusted by walkers, hikers, runners, bikers, and anyone else who strays out of city centers and off road – a total of 536,000 subscribers, up six percent on last year.

So, far from wilting in the digital age, Ordnance Survey is thriving. In March 2026 – the 225th anniversary of its first map – it reported its tenth consecutive year of revenue growth, up £4.1 million ($5.6 million) to a record total of nearly £199 million...
