Renewing a US passport has historically been one of the more tedious government processes available to American citizens: printed forms, paper checks, mailed-in photos that had to meet oddly specific size requirements and weeks of waiting with no clear status updates.
The State Department has been gradually dismantling that friction, and the current online renewal system represents the most significant simplification yet. Eligible applicants can now complete the entire process online in about 10 minutes, with no post office trip, no printed anything and payment handled digitally. Here’s who qualifies and how the system works.
Who’s eligible to renew their passport online? If your current passport was issued within the last 15 years, you probably qualify. You no longer need to create an account on MyTravelGov, and the new renewal process at opr.travel.state.gov should only take about 10 minutes to complete.
