How to Choose an AI Video Model in 2026: Duration, References, Audio, and Iteration Cost
AI video teams have more model choices than ever, yet model selection is still often reduced to a leaderboard question: Which generator is best?
That question is too broad for production. A model can look excellent in a benchmark and still be the wrong choice for a particular shot. A 25-second product reveal, a 10-second character reference test, and a fixed eight-second camera move are not the same problem. They have different constraints, different failure modes, and different definitions of success.
A more useful approach is to treat model selection as a routing problem:
Translate the shot brief into constraints, remove models that cannot satisfy those constraints, and compare the remaining options by expected cost per accepted shot.
