How Thin Can a Motor Get?
Most electric motors rely on coils made from copper wire wrapped around a stator to spin. That approach has served us well for more than a century, but there are other ways to create the electromagnetic fields needed to spin a motor. Salim from Salim's Workshop recently experimented with one of them by building an axial flux motor that replaces conventional windings with copper traces printed directly onto a circuit board.
The project is based on a permanent magnet synchronous motor and uses an axial flux layout rather than the more familiar radial design found in most hobby motors. In an axial flux motor, the magnetic field runs parallel to the shaft, allowing the entire assembly to be much thinner while still producing respectable torque. Salim's original design featured a dual-rotor, single-stator arrangement, with a PCB sandwiched between two magnet rotors to make use of magnetic flux from both sides.
