How Storytelling Helps Explain Complex Mechanics in Interfaces

I think almost every product designer has faced the same challenge at some point: how do you explain something complex using only a small set of interface tools?

I’d like to share my experience of using storytelling in product design — and how, sometimes, a simple story works better than long onboarding flows or detailed instructions.

In 2024, while working on a fast grocery delivery service, I worked on a large promotional campaign with small rewards for purchases. In offline retail, these campaigns are quite common: buy products for a certain amount and receive stickers, toys, or other small gifts.

But bringing this mechanic into a digital product was not so simple.

In a physical shop, there are shelf labels, posters, and sales assistants who can explain how the promotion works. In an app, users think differently: they want to quickly find their favourite pastry, place an order, and move...
