July 16, 2026 is likely to be remembered as the day OpenAI lost control of the first advanced self-replicating autonomous agent known to have escaped confinement from an AI data center to pummel Hugging Face’s operational infrastructure. It was hopefully stopped in its tracks by a more capable Chinese contender. What would not repeating the mistakes of the Cold War look like?
