How long can content creators like TIME and Warner Bros. Discovery wait for an AI giant to do the “morally right transaction” when it comes to licensing?

One of the repeated assertions coming out of the AI for Good Summit in Geneva last week was the admission that much of the current AI industry has been built on stolen data and content. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone - least of all diginomica readers passim - but the nature of the challenge that this presents for content creators remains real.

Avi Saxena is CTO, Global Digital, at Warner Bros. Discovery, the US media conglomerate whose content assets include The Discovery Channel, CNN, DC Studios, and Warner Bros. Entertainment among others. He admits:

We worry a lot about [our content being used to train AI models], because we are a company of creators. Creators are at the center of the company, and we thrive on that. We want to make sure the creative aspect of content is not lost. This is the primary reason we don't...
