How Delphi Group is using its COVID experience to predict future epidemics via the cloud
In Ancient Greece, Delphi was the seat of the great oracle, Pythia – the high priestess who was consulted about pestilence, war, and the fortunes of kings. So much so that Delphi was regarded as the center of the classical world. Today, many organizations see AI as that oracle, and have placed it at the core of their own decision-making – for good or ill. Titans have made fortunes as a result (and have occasionally clashed).
But there are massive challenges in creating the supporting infrastructure for predictive, decision-making systems: you can’t just build a temple on a mountainside anymore. During our own recent pestilence, the COVID pandemic, that was certainly the experience of the Delphi Group, the unit within Carnegie Mellon University that is dedicatedtodeveloping the theory and practice of epidemic detection, tracking, and prediction.
