On February 5, 2026, Canadian officials briefed various parliamentary committees on a proposed trade deal with Indonesia, with these discussions also including potential cooperation on emerging technologies to include artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and defense, among others. Just several days later, Indonesia announced its intention to be the connecting “bridge” between emerging and developed countries with a focus on AI governance policies at the AI Action Summit (AIAS), with then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in attendance, highlighting Canada’s direct ties in shaping global AI policy alongside Indonesia.
Indonesia’s emerging leadership in AI has been driven by a combination of digital infrastructure growth, government initiatives, and private-sector investment. However, to fully realize its potential economic growth via AI, Indonesia will need to lean on Canadian support, thus necessitating increased Canada-Indonesia cooperation in the years to come.
