We like to believe we make decisions based on the present. We study the evidence, examine the risks, debate the options, and try to anticipate what comes next. But there is another influence quietly sitting at the table: our imagined version of the past.
I call this Historically Imagined Time.
Historically Imagined Time is not history itself. It is the version of history we carry in our heads—the compressed, edited, inherited, and often romanticized story of what life used to be like. That imagined past becomes a reference point for judging the present, and because the reference point is often distorted, it can distort our decisions about the future.
