Google is experimenting with paying publishers when their work contributes to AI-generated search answers, but early payouts vary dramatically.

The company is running an invitation-only test that pays about 100 publishers when their content helps power AI answers, according to The Information, as relayed by The Verge.

The pilot, known as the AI Contribution Pilot, began less than a year ago and is being tracked through Google Search Console. Publishers are reportedly paid based on how significantly their content contributes to an AI-generated answer, rather than simply because their work is cited.
