Google Maps Ads Are Not a Campaign: The Technical Architecture Behind Local Advertising
Most discussions about Google Maps Ads start with the wrong question:
“How do I create a Google Maps Ads campaign?”
There is an important technical problem with that question.
Google Maps Ads are not a single campaign type sitting inside Google Ads. Maps is a serving surface that can receive inventory from multiple Google Ads campaign types and configurations.
That distinction matters.
If you are trying to troubleshoot why a business appears in Google Maps organically but does not receive paid visibility, why a location asset is not serving, why a promoted pin appears inconsistently, or why you cannot isolate Maps spend in the way you expected, the answer usually sits somewhere in the relationship between campaigns, location assets, Google Business Profile data, geographic targeting, auctions, conversion goals, and Maps inventory.
This article looks at that system from a technical perspective.
