Google Introduces Direct Password and Passkey Transfers on Android
Google has introduced a native Android migration protocol designed to simplify switching between password management services. Built into devices running Android 8 and later, the operating system feature allows users to transfer stored passwords and passkeys directly between supported applications without exporting plain-text files.
Historically, changing password managers required exporting data into unencrypted CSV files, exposing credentials to local security risks. Furthermore, cryptographic passkeys could not be exported using legacy methods, forcing users to manually re-register key pairs across individual websites and platforms.
The new system operates seamlessly via system-level orchestration. When a user initiates an import within a new password manager, Android automatically detects compatible installed vaults and coordinates identity verification. Once approved by the user, the operating system securely moves the selected credentials end-to-end within seconds.
