Google Goes Direct to Indian Authorities on Child Abuse Content
Google has agreed to report content flagged as child sexual abuse material, or CSAM, directly to Indian authorities, changing a long-standing process in which such reports have first gone to the U.S.-based National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).
It signals growing pressure on global technology platforms to examine whether centralized reporting systems remain suitable for markets where response time can be critical.
Until now, Google and Meta have for years reported such material to NCMEC. The U.S.-based nonprofit then passes relevant reports to law enforcement agencies in the country concerned.
That creates an additional step between a platform detecting potentially abusive material and domestic authorities receiving the information.
According to Reuters, two Indian government sources said officials had recently pressed technology companies including Google and Microsoft to report child abuse content concerning India directly to Indian authorities.
