Google Changes AI Access Rules for Schools Ahead of 2027
Google is giving schools more control over AI, but turning off the technology could come with an unexpected consequence: losing access to Google Search.
The company announced Nov. 3 that it plans to make its AI tools unavailable to K-12 students by default unless school administrators explicitly enable them. The changes, expected to roll out in early 2027, will give schools more control over services including Gemini, NotebookLM, and AI-powered Search experiences.
The policy, expected to roll out early next year, covers Gemini, Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM), Gemini in Classroom and Google Search. Administrators will be able to decide which services students can use.
Google said the changes follow feedback from teachers, school administrators, researchers and policymakers who want greater control over how children interact with AI. However, the decision comes with an important limitation.
Schools that completely disable Google’s AI services will also lose Search access for student accounts.
