GlitchCaster Turns 3D Printers Into Automated Fault Injectors
Electromagnetic fault injection (EMFI) is a powerful technique for testing the security of electronic devices, but doing it properly can require some fairly specialized equipment. GlitchCaster, an open source hardware project developed by Diffused Tactics, aims to make the process more accessible with a relatively inexpensive EMFI tool that can be mounted to equipment you may already have sitting around the workshop.
GlitchCaster is based on the open source PicoEMP design and generates an electromagnetic pulse of roughly 250 V through a small probe coil. The idea is to position that coil near a target device and fire precisely timed pulses that can temporarily disrupt its operation. Researchers can then use those faults to study how hardware responds and look for potential security weaknesses.
