The Arduino VENTUNO Q was built primarily for edge AI and robotics applications, but in the hands of a hacker, it can do a lot more. Jim Bruges wanted to push this new board to its limits, so he tried turning it into a gaming PC. An embedded hardware platform with an Arm architecture is about the least likely candidate for a good gaming rig, but that's where the fun came in for Bruges.

Getting Steam running was the first challenge. The VENTUNO Q has Arm CPU cores, while Steam and nearly every game available through it are compiled for x86 PCs. Bruges worked around this incompatibility with FEX-Emu, which translates x86 and x86-64 instructions to ARM64 on the fly. Steam and its games run against an x86 Ubuntu root filesystem, and an x86 build of Mesa and the open-source Turnip Vulkan driver provide hardware-accelerated rendering on the Adreno GPU.
