Founder Fatigue in the AI Arms Race: Why Speed Is a Double-Edged Sword
The promise of AI was efficiency. The reality, for many founders, is a heavier load.
Many founders who feel behind are objectively performing well. They are exhausted because they are benchmarking themselves against noise instead of business fundamentals. A 2025 survey of 156 founders found that 72% experienced mental health impacts including anxiety, burnout, and depression, with 45% rating their current mental health as "bad" or "very bad." Over half said AI-related disruption had significantly increased their stress in the past year alone.
The EY data paints a similar picture at the leadership level. More than half of senior leaders say they feel like they're failing amid AI's rapid growth, and a similar proportion say company-wide enthusiasm for AI adoption is declining.
The people most committed to AI are the ones most at risk. The pressure is real but so is the cost.
