The cyclosporiasis outbreak that has sickened thousands across the US has now recorded its first two related deaths. Today, the state of Michigan, one of the hardest hit by the outbreak, reported that two people with “significant underlying health conditions” have died as a result of the infection.
Cyclospora, which causes a gastrointestinal illness commonly described as “explosive diarrhea,” has historically been linked to fresh produce such as berries and salad greens, but is notoriously hard to trace.
