Firehat Brings Back IEEE 1394 FireWire for Digital Video Work — As a Raspberry Pi 5-Compatible HAT
German electronics firm Computer Equipment Group has opened crowdfunding for the Firehat, a Hardware Attached on Top (HAT) module for the Raspberry Pi 5 and other single-board computers that adds the ability to capture digital video footage from IEEE 1394 FireWire cameras.
"Firehat is an open-source FireWire HAT for single-board computers with PCIe [PCI Express]," its creators explain. "It adds a VIA VT6315N IEEE 1394 controller and a 6-pin FireWire/i.LINK/DV port for connecting DV camcorders, decks, and other FireWire devices to modern SBCs. It was designed for Equip-1, a portable DV [Digital Video] recorder built around a Radxa ROCK 2F [single-board computer], but it is also available as a standalone board for the ROCK 2F, Raspberry Pi 5, and other SBCs that can expose PCIe over FPC [Flexible Printed Circuit cable] or an adapter."
