Firefox's Ajit Varma on enterprise security, AI model choice and what open source makes possible

Firefox 157 landed on 29 September with Project Nova, the most significant visual overhaul since Proton in 2021, featuring new colours, icons, spacing, Compact Mode restored after community demand, and a consistent design language across desktop and mobile. But talking to Ajit Varma, Head of Firefox at Mozilla, the changes underneath - including an enterprise security beta, AI model choice built into the browser, and Anthropic auditing the codebase via a GitHub pull request - are where the real investment is going.

Varma took the role in late 2025 after stints at WhatsApp, Google, Uber and Square. In a wide-ranging conversation ahead of the FX 157 launch, he walked through Firefox's positioning around enterprise security, AI governance, open source integrity and the regulatory tailwinds that are driving mobile growth in Europe.
