Fintech futures– what should the UK’s policy and strategy priorities be?

Aside from making PR-friendly announcements about seizing new technologies’ potential to deliver the growth that, currently, remains elusive, the British government has fumbled tech policy in recent years. Downing Street’s inability to read a room – except US tech giants’ boardrooms – has undermined the UK’s position time and time again.

Take AI, for example. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ignored the findings of trade organization UKAI’s report on copyright and the creative sectors, then went on to ignore Britain’s $160 billion creative industries, plus the findings of two House of Lords’ Communications and Digital Committee Inquiries, and tried to rig last year’s public consultation in favour of a preferred option that gave US hyperscalers everything they wanted. Since then? An embarrassing climbdown and nothing else of substance.
