The availability of faster, more dependable internet connections has been trending up in recent years. One big reason why: the growing presence of fiber and 5G fixed-wireless providers. Each of those technologies now offers broadband speeds (defined by the FCC as at least 100Mbps down and 20Mbps up) to more than half of the US, representing about a 5% availability bump over the previous year. Meanwhile, cable internet’s broadband speeds are now available to at least 83% of the country.

That means home internet users in 2026 have more options for broadband than ever before. That’s a good thing, but it also means that you’ve got a lot more than speed to take into consideration as you shop for providers.
