This summer has reminded us that climate change is no longer a distant scenario for Europe’s energy system. Heatwaves brought dangerous temperatures, public health warnings, and renewed pressure on critical infrastructure, as well as raging wildfires across several countries that broke out much earlier than in previous years.

The human impact of extreme heat is rightly the first concern. But the pressure it places on energy systems is also becoming harder to ignore.

Electricity demand rises as homes, offices, hospitals and public buildings try to stay cool. Hot, still weather can reduce wind generation, while solar output may fall away in the evening even as temperatures remain high.

These are no longer abstract planning challenges. The heatwaves of summer 2026 showed how quickly unusual conditions can become real-time operational realities - realities that also expose a critical issue in Europe’s transition to cleaner energy.
