ERP vendors have lost the control of the narrative. What's the story?

I’ve owned a few dogs in my lifetime. I’ve learned that their attention span can vary a lot. If they see a squirrel or other small critter, their focus on that animal is intense and exclusive. They can’t see or do anything else until that animal moves away. Those distractions are highly interesting to the dog and can cause them to forget all else. Tech vendors, I’ve learned, can be dogs, too.

ERP vendors, like many other technology purveyors, can get overly enthused about a new technology. When that happens, their focus gets shifted, sometimes temporarily and sometimes permanently. That means that their attention span can go overly and singularly deep into the new tech while their customers want something else: value. That situation isn’t necessarily a good thing for the vendor or the customer.
