Field-programmable gate array (FPGA) specialist Efinix has announced the expansion of its Sapphire system-on-chip family to 64 bits, adding a new RISC-V processor core option with, it says, improved efficiency and performance over its existing 32-bit equivalent.

"Customers building increasingly sophisticated embedded and edge AI [Artificial Intelligence] systems have been asking us for a path to 64-bit processing without giving up the low power and configurability that made Sapphire successful," clkaims Efinix vice-president Mark Oliver of the company's latest launch. "Sapphire RV64 gives designers that headroom, with larger memory spaces, deeper caches, and more capable debug, while staying true to the user-configurable philosophy of the entire Sapphire SoC suite."

Efinix's existing Sapphire family has focused on 32-bit implementations of the free and open RISC-V instruction set architecture, offering options...
