Quadcopter drones are inherently inefficient when compared to fixed wing drones, but the sacrifice to flight time and distance is worthwhile for the maneuverability benefits. However, it is still a good idea to make quadcopters as efficient as possible to maximize time in the air. There isn’t any way to get around the balance between weight and battery capacity, so efficiency gains are important. To that end, quadmovr experimented with a novel radial impeller design.

Virtually all quadcopters (and other multi-rotor drone configurations) use conventional propellers. They may have varying numbers of blades, varying diameters, and varying pitch angles, but they all operate under the same principle. quadmovr started with a small, lightweight racing drone with incredible performance and it had those typical propellers.

The experimental replacements for those propellers are radial impellers. Their spinning blades push air outwards, duct-like channels force that air downward to create thrust along...
