Dreamforce 2026 - Sam Altman, second time around and some things do improve with age

When Sam Altman made his Dreamforce debut back in 2024, I confess I left his session less-than-impressed by his performance, not least his ludicrous pitch that we should all regard hallucinations as part and parcel of the gen AI experience, not a dangerous bug.

Since then Altman has, of course, become a big noise in the AI sector. OpenAI stands on the verge of trillion dollar+ IPO, albeit one that’s just been pushed back to 2027. His pronouncements on social media grab headlines. He’s even feted to his face by President Trump as ‘Mr AI’ (or he was until this week when, when unlike NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang, he broke ranks to back Anthropic in its call for an AI slowing of pace!)

On the other hand since that first Dreamforce outing, there have been numerous damaging exposes of the way OpenAI is run and questions raised about Alman’s own...
