DOJ signals interest in piloting AI legal assistant

The pilot would assess whether AI can execute multi-step legal tasks without step-by-step attorney prompting.
The Justice Department is asking vendors for information about commercially available artificial intelligence legal assistant platforms that can analyze documents and provide legal research, according to a SAM.gov document posted Friday.
The information could shape a pilot, which DOJ envisions would involve 20 to 30 government users. The pilot would be conducted in a vendor’s FedRAMP-authorized or commercially available cloud environment with synthetic or public test data.
A DOJ spokesperson did not return a request for comment on why the department is interested in an AI legal assistant platform or when it would plan to pilot the technology.
