OpenAI Built Always-On AI Agents Called Dots. Then Elon Musk’s xAI Bought Dot.com.
OpenAI introduced Dots this week: colorful, persistent AI agents designed to keep working after you stop talking to them.
Naturally, the domain names are a disaster.
Type dot.com into your browser and you don’t get OpenAI.
You get Grok Bot, the competing always-on agent from Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI.
Type dots.com and you don’t get OpenAI there either.
You get Dots, a women’s clothing brand.
This is apparently what happens when one of the world’s largest AI companies launches a major new product without controlling either obvious .com.
And then the internet noticed.
The original viral post revealing that Dot.com redirects to Grok opened with:
“AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA NO WAY.”
“OpenAI just announced Dots.”
“SpaceXAI bought Dot.com”
The post blew past a million views within hours and had passed 3 million by Tuesday evening. (TechCrunch)
