Design Is the New Code
Why the AI Race Is Quietly Becoming a Design War
As a data engineer and system integrator, I used to think the toughest challenges lived in SQL, schemas, and pipelines. Lately, I’m convinced the real bottleneck has shifted in the AI race, design is becoming the new code.
When More Code Stopped Helping
For most of my career, impact meant code.
If I could ship a new data model, optimize a warehouse query, or wire two stubborn systems together, I felt useful. As long as dashboards loaded quickly and the pipelines stayed green, I assumed the business was covered.
Then I started seeing the same pattern, over and over:
- Dashboards that were technically correct but rarely opened.
- Metrics that were carefully defined, then quietly reimplemented three different ways.
- Executives who could recite the numbers but still didn’t trust them enough to make a hard call without their own “side spreadsheet.”
