CrystalDiskInfo Fights Fake Samsung SSD Market With New Clone Detection Feature
With a massive influx of terrifyingly convincing counterfeit Samsung 990 Pro drives hitting third-party marketplaces earlier this year, buying a high-end SSD lately has felt a bit like navigating a minefield. Now, one of the most essential pieces of software in any PC builder's arsenal is getting a killer upgrade to help fight back. Noriyuki "hiyohiyo" Miyazaki, the developer behind the popular storage diagnostic tool CrystalDiskInfo, announced on Xwitter that the software's latest update will include a dedicated clone detection feature specifically aimed at sniffing out fake Samsung drives.
For years, counterfeit storage was easy to spot. The drives would immediately choke under the lightest workloads or report wildly inaccurate capacities, obviously marking them as fake. The recent wave of fake Samsung 990 Pros is a different beast entirely. These drives utilize aggressive SLC caching and third-party Maxio controllers to actively spoof early sequential read and write tests....
