Coupa's tech chief explains its two recent acquisitions and its approach to domain knowledge

In May, spend management vendor Coupa announced two acquisitions in quick succession. Rossum extends its capabilities in intelligent document processing, while Tonkean adds new agentic integration and orchestration functions. I recently spoke to Salvatore Lombardo, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Coupa, about the acquisitions, but I was also intrigued to find out more about the vendor’s recent decision to maintain its own domain-specific language model rather than continuing to use general-purpose foundation models. While this will also reduce Coupa’s token costs, the main goal is to improve the accuracy of responses in the spend management domain. He explains:
