I love electromechanical contraptions and you do, too — they’re just too intricate and clever to ignore. An electromechanical system is basically a machine, but with the benefit of electricity. Simple, right? Except a lot of people get it wrong and bring mechatronics into the mix. Traditional split-flap clocks are electromechanical devices. But Clough42’s rotating wheel clock is a mechatronics masterpiece.

Clough42, AKA “James,” built this for Not an Engineer, AKA “Rowan,” for Toolroom Takeover 2026, which is basically Secret Santa in the summer for famous YouTube machinists. As an event for machinists, most of the gifts end up being purely mechanical. But some are electromechanical. And some, especially when James is involved, end up being something more.
