Claude Hackers Are Hijacking Tokens From Paying Subscribers
Keep an eye on your token use metrics, as hackers may be jacking them up without your knowledge. TechCrunch reports that British AI consultant Grant De Swardt saw his Claude Max 20x account burning through tokens, even when he wasn't using it. Someone had access to his $ 200-a-month subscription.
To confirm his suspicions, Swardt deliberately didn't use his account the next day, and lo and behold, token use jumped from 45% of his monthly allowance to 55%. He'd also made sure to pause or disconnect all his agentic automated tools that could have inadvertently used tokens. It was definitely someone else.
Swardt contacted Anthropic, which promptly cut off his token access entirely to triage the issue. But this left Swardt unable to use the AI himself. As an AI advisor who helps businesses get set up using AI, this was extremely detrimental.
