Chromebooks Will Stop Receiving Updates in 2034
Chromebooks' days are numbered. Google officially plans to update ChromeOS and release security patches through 2034, after which Chromebooks will need to switch to Googlebook OS—Google's new Android-based laptop OS—or become obsolete.
9to5Google spotted a support page updated September 23 that reads: "We will maintain support for current Chromebook devices running ChromeOS as outlined in our Auto Update policy and the Chromebooks you have today will continue to receive updates through their supported lifetime." That policy promises a 10-year update period, but ChromeOS specifically has an end-of-support deadline of 2034.
Another bullet on the support page says that "many of our newest Chromebook devices will be eligible to transition over to Googlebook OS." Google has not released a list of which Chromebook models will be eligible for the transition, nor how to migrate user data from one OS to the other. Google says those details will come next year.
