Building PoquitoTalk, a Zero-Install Voice Translation Workflow for Real-World Conversations
Nearly fourteen years ago, I packed my bags in Belgium and moved to Bocas del Toro, a Caribbean archipelago off Panama's northwest coast.
Coming from Western Europe, the warmth of the people struck me first.
In Bocas, you greet your neighbors whenever you walk down the street. Whether it is an Afro-Antillean elder on a porch, a Panamanian boat captain tying off at the dock, or an indigenous family selling fruits and vegetables in the park, daily life begins with human recognition: "¡Buenas!" or "¡Hola, vecino!". If you take an interest in their culture, Ngäbe neighbors are glad to teach you words in their native language.
As a translator & language lover, I focused on polishing my Spanish and picking up local Ngäbe & Guari-Guari phrases because, to me, speaking someone's language is essential. It’s not just practical; it’s how you show respect.
