Build Your Own 6-DoF Spatial Stylus for $155
Professional-grade spatial tracking has long been one of the biggest barriers to experimenting with projection-based interfaces. While motion capture systems like OptiTrack can deliver impressive accuracy, they also carry price tags ranging from $5,000 to $15,000, putting them well beyond the reach of many researchers, makers, and university labs. A new open source project from Aalto University aims to change that by providing a replicable six-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) spatial stylus that costs a fraction of the price of existing commercial systems.
Developed by Krisjanis Rijnieks, the Lighthouse Stylus is designed specifically for projection-based CAD/CAM and human-computer interaction research. The stylus achieves better than 1 mm positional accuracy while remaining inexpensive enough to build in a typical fabrication lab. Rather than requiring specialized motion capture cameras, it leverages Valve's Lighthouse tracking technology through the Tundra Tracker ecosystem.

The project isn't completely open, however....
