Build a Privacy-Focused Smart Doorbell with Arduino

It seems like everybody has video doorbells these days. They are one of the most popular components in a modern smart home, but they come with an uncomfortable tradeoff. Every motion event, visitor, and package delivery can end up passing through a company's cloud servers before reaching the homeowner. What could possibly go wrong?

Fortunately, we don’t have to do without doorbell cameras to maintain our privacy. In a recent video, Arduino co-founder Massimo Banzi and the SuperModerno team demonstrated an open source smart doorbell that performs person detection, delivers notifications, and stores all data locally, keeping sensitive information under the owner's control instead of sending it to a third party. It’s made from highly accessible and off-the-shelf components, so you can make one too.
